There's a lot of feelings in this show!!

I will always remember Piece of Me because it was one of the first vids I ever saw that pulled no punches: it had something serious to say, something real and painful, and it wasn't holding back in saying it. I really love that, and I still think the vid has that "....ouch" factor.

Right?! I remember being blown away the first time I saw it!

I remember being all "holy crap, vids can do that?!" when I first saw it!

Yeah, I feel like sometimes you hit a milestone vid like that and it just hugely expands your understanding of what vids can do. VidUKon as a whole was massive for me in that respect - the first year I went I feel like I learned SO much about what was possible just from listening to the conversations around me and the ways people were analysing the vids.

Oh absolutely! I think that happens with art generally - you find something that blows away a barrier you didn't even know your mind had, and magically there's all these new options! - but there's something very visceral about watching it happen. And I love that VidUKon IS somewhere where vids get discussed as art!

I didn't know it until calvinahobbes showed it to me when we were looking for vids, and I was shocked at how raw and direct it was!

It really, REALLY is. Britney singing her own pain, set to the actual footage of that actual pain, is a LOT.

This was such a well-balanced show, such a mix of different emotions!

I really liked the pairing of Piece of Me with King of Anything - Piece of Me was definitely more familiar to the VidUKon audience and Britney's story is pretty generally recognisable, and I feel like watching that first made me much readier to understand King of Anything and read it on a deeper level without knowing much about Sidney Crosby. That first shot where he looks cornered by all the microphones packs such a punch, and I think without knowing the fandom, it might not have been so impactful without Piece of Me setting me up to immediately read that clip in a certain way. Terrific bit of curation!

Plus I love the second half with all the nostalgic fandom feelings, that was such a rush when we watched it at the con!

Oh what a good point about the curation! I hadn't thought of that at all, but you're absolutely right.

And yes, watching these with a group was EPIC: that was a whole room of people having feelings at the same time! Amazing!

We were very proud of some of the curation - those two in sequence in particular :)

But it ran too long in the end - to begin with, we were worried about not finding enough vids, and suddenly we really had too many, but couldn't limit ourselves - rookie mistake, *hands*.

Haha, in fairness I don't think that's a rookie mistake at all, it definitely happens to veteran VJs too! I know I've definitely had vidshows where I've struggled to find enough, and then I've shifted my focus just slightly, or found a new place to look, and it's made it into a whole different show! And sometimes the vids are just TOO good and it's hard to leave anything out!
