VidUKon is over for another year!

Thank you so much to everyone who attended or otherwise supported this year's con - we had a wonderful time and we hope you did too!

Don't forget, most content will still be available to members in Conline for the foreseeable future, so if you attended you can go back and rewatch your favourite vidshows any time you like.

Running a completely online con was a new experience for us, so although we collect feedback at the end of every con, this year we'd especially like to know what worked for you and what didn't. We'd very much appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill out our feedback form.

You can fill in the form even if you didn't attend the con. We are not collecting email addresses - your response will be completely anonymous.

Hope to see you again next year!

This year’s totally online VidUKon is beginning at 6pm UK time, this Friday!

If you’re attending, follow these steps to get the most out of your con experience:

*
Make an account on Conline, our online convention platform, at http://conline.club/login/ - all content will be available here.

* Join the convention itself by visiting https://vidukon.conline.club and clicking "Join".

* Click on your name at the top right of the page to adjust your account details, including updating your display name to the name you’re using for the con if needed.

* If you’d like to, you can also amend your timezone in the account details page to have the option of viewing content in line with your own timezone.

* Once you’re registered (there may be a short wait while we manually link your registration to your con membership), don’t forget to visit the schedule and sign up for any pre-registration content you’d like to participate in, namely the Friday Quiz and the Group Vidding Workshop.

* On any VidUKon Conline page, click on the bluey-purpley Discord icon in the row on the top right of the screen to join the VidUKon Discord server, where most of the weekend’s socialising will take place, including chats during each vidshow. If you do not already have a Discord account, you will need to create one.

*
Check out the PDF version of the conbook, which will be available on Conline once the con starts. If you provided your address when you registered, you’ll also receive a physical copy after the con!

Looking forward to seeing you all at the con!

We neeeearly have a working virtual con platform - not quite there for having a proper play yet, but close!

It would be great if people could start to create accounts on the platform and join VidUKon's bit of it, so we can transfer your registrations across (they're two completely different sites, so there's a bit of a shuffle.)

To create an account:

1. Go to https://conline.club/login/ and click on the social network of your choice.
2. Go to https://vidukon.conline.club/ and click the "Join" link on the top right.

That's it! You're done!

Hopefully. If something goes spang in to the corner, let us know :D

The best bet after that is to back slowly away until the "OMG PLS HELP BETA!" alert goes out, when way more stuff will be properly plugged in and not making ominous creaking sounds.

(Plus, if anyone is a member of the vidding discord server, there is now a conline channel there where you can mention any tech support-type issues that may arise.)

This year’s entirely online VidUKon is just six weeks away! Join us live from your screen for an entire weekend of fandom fun, socialising, and all the vids! Registrations close on Sunday 24 May, and the price to register is £19.99.

We’ll be releasing a full schedule very soon, but in the meantime, here’s an idea of what you can look forward to:

  • A brand new online con platform, so that you can conveniently access all programming from one handy location. (We’re also hoping to include some extra bells and whistles, like the ability to experience some parts of the con in line with your own timezone - more information coming soon!
  • A dedicated Discord hangout space to socialise with your fellow attendees
  • Panels! Including the return by popular demand of in-depth analysis of favourite vids!
  • Activities, like our regular quiz and our first ever totally-online, who-knows-what-the-heck-will-happen group vidding workshop! Join a team to be part of creating what will surely be a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
  • And of course, streaming vidshows! Watch along at home and join others in each vidshow’s chat to discuss and squee during the show.

Vidshows coming up this year include a 2010 retrospective, a look at recruiter vids, a celebration of C-dramas, an entire vidshow of Jewish dancing, and more! Plus of course regular shows like Vidder’s Choice, The Best of Festivids and the Saturday night Premieres showcase!

Here are the dates to remember:

Sunday 10 May - deadline for both Premieres (open to absolutely anyone who has a brand-new unseen vid to show off) and Vidder’s Choice (open to all registered members to showcase a back-catalogue vid). More information can be found HERE.

Sunday 24 May - deadline to register for the convention

Fri-Sun 12-14 June - VidUKon 2020! The con’s home timezone is BST (UK time), and things will likely be kicking off on the Friday late afternoon/evening!

Uploads are now open for Premieres and Vidder's Choice! You have until the end of Sunday 10 May to upload your vids for these two shows. You can upload your vid(s) by logging in at the VidUKon site, heading to the Upload page and following the instructions.

Edit: As this year's VidUKon will be streaming, to ensure your vid can be shown, please include an embed code and link! The vid should also be viewable without a password. For premiering vids, we suggest you make your vid unlisted/private until after the show to preserve the surprise. Get in touch if you need any help with this!

Premieres

Absolutely any vidder can submit a premiering vid to VidUKon. You do not need to be attending/supporting the convention. You do not need to be at any particular level of skill or experience. The vid you submit can be in any fandom, genre or style. It can be a solo vid or a collaboration. The only requirement is that the vid be completely new, showing for the first time at the con. This means that once you submit it to us, you cannot release it online or show it at any other convention until after the Premieres show on Saturday night of the con. After that you can release the vid as usual.

The deadline for Premieres is Monday 10 May, so make sure to upload your vid to the site before then. Ideally we prefer vids to be submitted in our standard Premieres format - there's more information about how to achieve this at the bottom of THIS POST. However, if you have trouble doing this for whatever reason, please submit your vid anyway and we can handle it - we'd hate to lose out on your vid!

Vidder's Choice

Vidders who have registered to attend/support the convention can submit one of their own existing vids to this show. It can be any vid at all that you've made, so long as it has been previously released. This is an opportunity to highlight a hidden gem, celebrate an old favourite, or maybe even drag a few new people into an obscure fandom!

The deadline for Vidder's Choice is also Sunday 10 May. Vids can be uploaded in any format. If you are planning to purchase an online membership and wish to have a vid included in the show, you will need to register before uploading a vid. (If this is a problem for any reason, though, please get in touch and let us know!)

As a reminder, this year's con is taking place entirely online! Register for a supporting/online membership from anywhere in the world to join us on June 12-14!

Greetings, vidders and vid fans!

Thank you for bearing with us for these last few weeks as we worked to come to a decision about VidUKon 2020. The decision we’ve reached is this:

VidUKon 2020 will run entirely online. There will be no physical con this year, but we will still have a full weekend of programming. Watch this space for more detail about what exactly that will look like, but we plan to cover all the usual favourites, from vidshows to panels to socialising!

We would have loved to find a way to hold a physical con, but given the current guidelines around gathering in groups and unnecessary travel, and the high level of uncertainty about when things might improve, it makes the most sense for us to forge ahead with a plan that we’re confident is possible.

If you have already purchased an attending membership to the con, in the coming days these will be converted into supporting/online memberships and you will be refunded the difference. If you have purchased an attending membership and for any reason you would prefer not to attend/support the online con, please get in touch with us so that we can help. If you have not yet registered but would like to attend the online con, you can still purchase a supporting membership in the usual way.

If you have any other questions or concerns, let us know either in the replies to this post or by email, and we will do our best to address them.

All of this means that we are still seeking Premieres! All vidders are invited and encouraged to submit premieres, whether or not they are attending/supporting the con. Vids can be any fandom, theme, or style, and there is no minimum level of experience required. The only requirement is that the vid be completely new, showing for the first time at the con. The deadline for Premieres submissions is May 10. We’ll give fuller instructions on how to submit closer to the time.

Vidders with a con membership can also submit one of their back-catalogue vids for the Vidder’s Choice show. The deadline for Vidder’s Choice is also May 10, so start having a think about which of your vids you’d like to show off!

Hello vidders and vid fans,

Thank you for your patience, and thank you especially to those of you who weighed in on the comments of our last post. We're continuing to explore the best options for this year's con - taking all of your thoughts into account, as well as monitoring the changing situation - and we should have more news to share with you soon.

 Greetings vidders and vid fans.

With the current concerns about COVID-19, we wanted to share what plans we have in place in the event that we aren’t able to go ahead as expected, and to hear your own thoughts as attendees and potential attendees.

While it’s unclear how things will develop from here, the con is still three months away, which gives us time to decide on the best course of action.

The options we’re currently considering are:

1. Running the con as planned. It may be that the situation will become clearer soon, and that the con won’t be affected. (However, in this case there could still be issues with international travel or with attendees missing out because of needing to self-isolate.

2. Delaying the con to a point later in the year. Up until 60 days before the con, we are able to move our hotel booking without too much trouble. However, this could negatively affect folks who have already paid for travel or booked time off for the con and cannot make new arrangements.

3. Moving the entire con online. Since VirtUKon has been in place for the last several years, we could give partial refunds down to supporting member level and run the virtual con as the main con.

4. Cancel this year’s con. Obviously this is our least preferred option, but if for some reason none of the other options were viable, we could cancel the convention entirely. We are looking into the possibility of refunds, or the option to defer membership to next year’s con.

We’re aware that attendees and potential attendees may have a range of perspectives on this question, so we invite you to let us know your thoughts in the comments, so that we can take them into account as we make this decision.

If you're coming to VidUKon in June, you'll probably need somewhere to stay! Rooms in the Future Inn Cardiff Bay have been set aside at a special rate for the convention, and these can be booked using the contact details HERE until Monday April 13 2020:

Friday - £81.52 single or £93.52 twin/double

Saturday - £125.52 single or £137.52 twin/double

Sunday - £72.72 single or £84.72 twin/double

We recommend taking advantage of the convention rooms if you can - Rammstein are performing in Cardiff on the weekend of the con, so rooms elsewhere are already expensive, and some hotels (such as the Travelodge at Atlantic Wharf) are already fully booked.

Each room is wheelchair accessible, has two double beds and can accommodate up to four people (for more than two people, check rates with the hotel.) Breakfast is included in the rate, and you won't need to pay anything until the weekend of the con.

If you'd like to find someone to share a room with, comment on this post or take a look to see if anyone else has already commented.

Also, for those considering turning the convention into a longer weekend and exploring Cardiff, getting together for events beforehand, or just having more time to travel the hotel currently has rooms available for Thurs night/Mon night at the following rates:

Thursday 11/06/2020 - £85.92 single occupancy & £97.92 double occupancy

Monday 15/06/2020 - £77.12 for single occupancy & £89.12 for double occupancy.

VidUKon 2020 is just a few short months away! If you’d like to join us on 12-14 June in Cardiff Bay, don’t forget to register before the price rises on April 11. If you can’t make it, you can still get a supporting membership which includes real-time access to the virtual con as well as a few other fun things!

Programming

In order to have a con, we need programming, so we’re delighted to announce that programming suggestions are now open until the end of February! Please bring us your ideas for vidshows and panels you’d like to run, and don’t hesitate to let us know if you have an idea for something new that’s not quite either of those things.

We welcome programming ideas from first-time VJs and panellists as well as from veterans - if you’d like to give it a try but you’re not sure where to start, get in touch! You’re also very welcome to VJ as a pair or a group. In the event that we have too many programme items to choose from priority will be given to attending members, but supporting members are also very welcome to submit vidshow ideas.

To submit a vidshow idea, go HERE, and to submit a panel idea, go HERE.

Premieres

As usual, we are seeking brand new, never-before-seen vids for our Saturday night Premieres show.

All vidders are invited and encouraged to submit premieres, whether or not they are attending or supporting the con. Vids can be any fandom, theme, or style, and there is no minimum level of experience required.

The only requirement is that the vid be completely new, showing for the first time at the con. This means that once you submit it to us, you cannot release it online or show it at any other convention until after the Premieres show on Saturday night of the con. After that you can release the vid as usual.

The deadline for Premieres submissions is May 10. We’ll give fuller instructions on how to submit closer to the time.

Room Bookings

As usual we have reserved a block of rooms at a special convention rate (including breakfast) at the Future Inn, Cardiff Bay. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be booked by getting in touch with the hotel by phone or email, and mentioning that you are attending the con and would like one of the VidUKon reserved rooms. Each room can hold up to four occupants across two double beds. These rooms will be held for us until Monday April 13 2020, so make sure you book before then!

The prices for these rooms are as follows:

Friday - £81.52 single or £93.52 twin/double
Saturday - £125.52 single or £137.52 twin/double
Sunday - £72.72 single or £84.72 twin/double

If you have more than two people in your room, check with the hotel as these numbers will change slightly!

Saturday Night Dinner

For this year’s Saturday night dinner, we will be trying something slightly different. Instead of taking place in the hotel, the dinner will be held at a local restaurant. We will confirm the location soon, but it will be close to the hotel in order to give everyone plenty of time to return for evening programming.

Concom News

As a founding member of VidUKon, LithiumDoll has put incredible amounts of time, effort and love into the con over the years. This year she is stepping back from the day-to-day running of the con, and so we’re pleased to welcome to the concom purplefringe, who will be helping us to bring you all a wonderful weekend of vids, vidding and fandom fun!

The VidUKon auction returns!

Each year, wonderful vidders offer their services for folks to bid on. The money raised has helped us to buy our own AV equipment and paid for extra tea and coffee and other amenities at the con, with a proportion of the money raised beyond our targets going to charity. Plus, vidders and bidders have put their heads together and come up with some terrific vids, most of which have premiered at the con!

Signups for vidders are now open for this year’s auction. You can sign up as a vidder until 17 January, and bidding will be open from 24 January to 8pm UK time on 31 January.

If you want to offer your services to create a vid for the highest bidder, just head HERE, hit the blue Sign Up button, and fill in your details! This information will later appear on the auction page to help potential bidders choose which vidders to bid on. In the Fandoms box, you can provide a list of specific fandoms and/or broader details of the kinds of things you are comfortable vidding. In the Notes box you might include a link to your existing vids, a few sentences describing your style or favourite themes, information on how people should contact you to discuss potential ideas before bidding, or anything else that you think might help potential bidders decide!

Auction Coming Soon

The VidUKon 2020 auction will be open for signups from January 10 to January 17. If you’d like to offer your vidding services to help raise money for the con and for charity, now’s the time to start thinking about what you might like to offer.

We will open for content submissions for the whole of February 2020, so get your thinking caps on! We very much welcome submissions from first-time VJs/panellists, from non-vidders, and from folks not able to attend in person.

Vid Essays

After the success of 2019’s Anatomy of a Vid panel, we are trying something similar on our Dreamwidth! If you might be interested to contribute a short essay discussing one of your favourite vids, get in touch with us via email or social media.

Looking forward to seeing lots of you at VidUKon 2020!
